This depends on the type of cough your horse has. If the cough is severe and there is nasal discharge you will need to contact your vet.

Another factor to consider is allergies. Some horses react badly to straw/shavings and you may need to change their bedding completely.

For everyday coughing caused by dust etc. using a natural remedy like Breeze Up or Clean as a Whistle can help. Breeze Up contains eucalyptus, menthol, honey and plant extracts. Clean as a Whistle contains extracts of mullein, liquorice and garlic oil in a palatable nutritional base. All these ingredients work to open up the airways and lubricate the throat.

Some horses can be prone to coughing mid race/competition as they reach their athletic peak to help prevent against this Breeze Up is recommended.

Garlic, Honey and Glucose is also widely used. Garlic is well known for its health giving properties whereas Honey soothes sore throats.

If your horse’s condition persists please consult your vet.
