Equisept Trials

Trials were carried out successfully at the Irish Equine Centre, using the Equisept formulation, on the following list of organisms with organic loading varying from 10 4 to 10(6)microorganisms/ml.

1. Rhodococcus equi:             

Contagious disease of foals causing pneumonia and respiratory problems. Endemic in some stud farms.

2. Streptococcus equi:             

The casual agent of Strangles in horses.

3. Streptococcus sp:                 

Cause of endometritis, wound infections and respiratory infections
in horses.

4. Staphylcoccus aureus:         

Found in wound, uterine infections and skin infections.

5. E. coli:                                  

A cause of neonatal septicaemie in foals and endometritis in mares.

6. E. coli 0157:                        

A human pathogen but may or may not become a problem in horses in the future. 

7. Salmonella sp:                     

Cause of enteritis in horses and sometimes implicated in joint ills in foals.

8. Salmonella typhimurium:    

The most commonly isolated Salmonella in horses and also in all 
phage type 104:other species including humans.

9. Listeria monocytogenes:      

Not usually associated with equines, but may be a problem due to the use of baled haylage and silage.

10. Clostridium sp:                    

Cause of enteritis and wound infections.

11. Pseudomonas aeruginosa: 

A resistant pathogen found in many types of infection.

12. Candida albicans:              

Found in uterine infections and also respiratory infections.

13. Aspergillus sp:               

A known mycotoxin producer and a cause of COPD and related
performance afflictions in horses.

Results:
The product was effective in all trials.

Dilutions:
The solution rate recommended by the Irish Equine Centre is 300 ppm av.cl2 (1 tab per 10 litres water), strictly as part of the approved hygiene program.

Note:   For initial decontamination or on very porous surfaces it is suggested that a dilution of 2 tabs per 10 litres of water (600ppm av.cl2) be adopted, following the thorough clean-out regime.

 

Since these trials were completed Equisept has also been tested and been approved as effective against the Avian Bird Flu.
